Information about Lacuniacha: Pyrenees

“I’m looking for something different from the everyday routine”… “I’m looking for something that makes me feel like a child again”… Fresh air? Walks to become one with nature? The chance to visit the “natural inhabitants” of our lands? Well, look no further because Lacuniacha is the place I’ve been searching for.

It is defined as a "Biopark," encompassing 30 hectares of pristine Aragonese nature, explored via approximately 4.5 kilometers of mountain trails. Along this botanical route, visitors can observe around 14 different animal and 21 different plant species. For the public, it is the ideal place to witness firsthand the grandeur of the region's flora and fauna. Located near the village of Piedrafita de Jaca, the park forms part of the Ordesa-Viñamala Biosphere Reserve , making it one of the internationally recognized territories within the framework of the MAB (Man and the Biosphere Programme).   from UNESCO . This project seeks to reconcile the conservation of biological and cultural diversity with economic and social development through the relationship between society and nature.

All the specimens in the park have a bit of a story, as their origins are varied: some were born in captivity, others come from recovery centers, and others have even been rescued from places where they did not receive the care they needed.

Several of the park's species are threatened and are involved in recovery projects, such as the European Bison, which involves releasing calves born in Lacuniacha into small bison populations in northern Europe.

The wildlife park is located in the old La Pinosa forest and can be divided into two distinct parts:

- Lacuniacha Baja : It looks like a mixed forest, where we can observe different plant species, some of which are protected, so it is not allowed to pick any of them.

- Lacuniacha Alta : It is an ecosystem of large subalpine meadows, shrubs and small mountain flowers that make the place an unparalleled landscape.

Its route is designed so that you can visit all the enclosures of the different species that inhabit the park, such as its cervids : deer, fallow deer, reindeer, roe deer; its caprines such as the Iberian mountain goat; and its wild boars, mouflons, boreal lynxes, European bison, chamois, bears, Przewalski's horses, wolves, foxes and even carrion birds and birds of prey in its observatory.

The place also has a gift and souvenir shop to remember your visit to Lacuniacha simply by looking at an object and a small open-air bar with a rest area and picnic area to recharge your energy after, before or even while you are still on the walk with its offer of sandwiches, snacks, appetizers, cold and hot drinks.

The park, nestled in the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees, also collaborates with schools and businesses on a program to showcase the beauty of the work carried out across its 40 hectares. To this end, it offers a variety of activities, including guided tours and workshops, all tailored to different age groups and educational levels, with content aligned with teachers' curricula.

The park itself has a series of recommendations and notices based on its experience for the best possible enjoyment by its visitors:

- Wear comfortable hiking or sports shoes as the entire park route consists of natural trails.

- In cold weather, hiking boots, warm clothing, and, if possible, walking sticks are essential in case there is ice or snow on the trails.

- Please note that baby strollers (except for special 4x4 strollers) and wheelchairs (manual or electric) are not allowed on the trails. Therefore, it is recommended to use a baby carrier for babies, and if you do not have one, you can rent one at the Park reception.

- The park is located between 1380 and 1580 meters latitude and as everything is done outdoors it is advisable to check the weather forecast beforehand and be prepared in case of any sudden change in conditions.

- For safety reasons, pets are not allowed and there is no pet daycare available.

- Remember that although these are animals that people see daily, they are still wild species, so it is mandatory to follow the trails, respect the signs, the tranquility of the animals and the information panels.

One of the great positive aspects of the Lacuniacha animal park, apart from its unique show, its animal and plant species, its enchanting views, the fact that it will bring you closer to nature like no other place in Aragon and its tranquility; is that it is also open all seasons of the year, thus offering different shows, with different colors and smells throughout the year.
