Information about Peniscola

Peñíscola is located on the beautiful Costa del Azahar , in the north of the province of Castellón (in the Valencian Community). It is located 80 kilometres from Castellón and 150 kilometres from Valencia.

In this town, the sea and nature come together to create a beautiful and original landscape. The Peñíscola area has fifteen beaches and coves bathed by the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Among them, the North beach stands out, which is the closest to the old town of the town. It is a huge and beautiful beach, located in a spectacular setting, as it is at the foot of the Castle of Papa Luna . Proof of this is that it has become the setting for famous television series, the latest of which is “Game of Thrones”. In addition, the quality of its waters and the numerous services it offers make it ideal for resting and relaxing. Along the five kilometres of this beach there are numerous apartments in which to stay to get to know it.

Peñíscola also offers a trip to the depths of nature, as it is located next to the Sierra de Irta Natural Park and the wetland known as Marjal . The natural park is a mountain range, on the edge of the sea and with fabulous flora and fauna. You can enjoy them both with guided tours and with hiking and cycling routes. In the case of the wetland, it is a lagoon of about 130 hectares, of great value for its environmental characteristics and for the endangered species it houses. Guided tours of this wetland are also organized, in which you can learn every detail of it.

In addition to these natural spaces, we must add the interesting cultural heritage hidden in Peñíscola. This city takes us back to the Renaissance , as the Castle of Papa Luna stands out above all its attractions. This is a fortress, located in the highest part of the city, which is a rock that juts out into the sea. It was built by the Templars and in its 700 years of history, it has been one of the three papal seats that have existed. Its most important period is considered to be when D. Pedro de Luna (Pope Luna) resided there. Today, it can be visited independently or with guided tours and is the venue for various exhibitions. It has been declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument and a Historic-Artistic Complex.

In addition, Peñíscola offers many other points of interest, such as the Artillery Park, the Portal de San Pedro, the lighthouse or the Museum of the Sea . To make the stay easier for all its visitors, the city has numerous apartments in which to stay comfortably.
