Information about Piles

Discover the best holiday apartments in Piles

The coastal town of Piles is located in the Autonomous Community of Valencia; specifically, it can be found between Miramar to the north, Palmera and Alquería de la Condesa to the west, and Oliva to the south.

The town's urban complex rises between the Nazaret-Oliva road and the path known as the pre-coastal step that crosses the Levante region. The town has maintained its original core for centuries, where the main square and the Carrer de Baix (Lower Street) coexist. From this area, other buildings were added over time, continuing to the present day. Piles extends north along Carrer Miramar and west along Carrer del Forn, Carrer de Salvador Salom, and Carrer Nou. The latter three lead to Carrer Santa Bárbara, the town's main entertainment area, as from this street, continuing westward, one finds a wide variety of restaurants and bars. In recent years, Piles has grown northward along Carrer Cervantes and southward along Carrer Moreres and Carrer Ramon y Cajal. In the town center, one finds Plaça Pare Pons, the old town, the town hall, and a wide variety of shops and schools.

The town of Piles grew up around its famous watchtower, a 16th-century defensive tower commissioned by King Philip II and designed by Vespasiano Gonzaga y Colonna, Viceroy of Valencia . The tower stands ten meters in diameter and thirteen meters high, with walls nearly three meters thick at its base and close to two meters at its highest point. Divided into two floors and leaning slightly westward , the tower is one of the town's main monuments and a must-see.

If you decide to travel in summer, you should know that Piles has an incredible beach with fine sand and a spectacular golden color which, when the sun's rays hit it, and contrasting with the wonderful blue of the sea, creates a paradisiacal environment, which is perfectly complemented by beautiful dunes, full of vegetation.

The main driver of Piles' economy is its 78% cultivated land, or 373 hectares of orange and mandarin groves surrounding the town . As a coastal town, a significant portion of its income comes from beach tourism, since its idyllic surroundings and pristine natural spaces attract tourists from both within Spain and abroad .

The town is located in the heart of the Valencian Community , guaranteeing the opportunity to enjoy a delicious paella, accompanied by a good wine , in a welcoming atmosphere. Furthermore, if you love refreshing juices or citrus cocktails, you can be sure to enjoy drinks made with freshly picked oranges . In Piles, you can not only enjoy traditional Valencian cuisine and its spectacular coastal scenery , but the town also boasts a rich cultural heritage , evident from its beach, where you'll find the aforementioned Piles Watchtower, a listed Historical-Artistic Heritage site , or the town's most colorful neighborhood, home to the 16th-century Parish Church of Santa Bárbara , which retains its chapel dedicated to the Communion of the earlier church . This chapel was damaged by an earthquake in 1732, but it has not lost its original structure built upon the site of the former mosque. The building has undergone several reconstructions over the years and currently looks immaculate. Every December 4th, Piles celebrates the feast day in honor of the saint for whom the complex is named .

Piles' leisure activities are mainly concentrated along the coast. Because it's not a major tourist destination, it offers a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can enjoy the company of other locals. In addition to beach activities, the town hosts a sports week, open to both residents and tourists.

As previously mentioned, Piles celebrates its minor festivities in honor of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of the parish church and the town itself, at the beginning of December. However , the most important celebration in the town is undoubtedly its main festival, held every year at the beginning of May , and it is also the longest-lasting celebration. It takes place in honor of Saint Philip Neri, Christ of the Agony, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Saint Ferdinand, and the Immaculate Conception.

A curious fact is that the Valencian pelota player, Juan Ciscar Sancho, was born in this municipality . The athlete is considered one of Piles's biggest celebrities and is a very important figure in the sport within the Valencian Community. In 1990, he was awarded the Federació de Pilota Valenciana's "Serve" prize .
