Arousa Island is located in the estuary of the same name, in the province of Pontevedra ( Galicia ). The island is divided into three parts: the area around the Punta Cabalo lighthouse and Arousa Island (joined by a narrow isthmus), and the Carreirón Natural Park . The island is connected to the Iberian Peninsula by a bridge almost 2 kilometers long, the longest in Galicia and one of the longest in Spain, which was inaugurated in 1985.
The island has been declared a nature reserve , due to its landscape and beaches, making it one of the main tourist destinations in Galicia, along with Sangenjo.
Of particular note is the Con do Forno viewpoint , the highest point on the island, which can be accessed by bike or on foot, a beautiful place for leisure and recreation from where you can contemplate wonderful panoramic views of the town, even of Cambados and O Grove, and the Ria de Arosa.
It has approximately 36 kilometers of coastline, 11 of which are beaches, including Área da Secada , La Lavanqueira , El Bao , Camaxe , Carreirón , and O Cabodeiro . There are three seafront promenades: the Campo promenade, the Cantiño promenade, and the one that runs from IGAFA (Galician Institute for Aquaculture Training) to Área da Secada.
Its main attractions are the area around the lighthouse, Areoso Island and, to the south, the Carreirón Natural Park.
The route to Punta Cabalo is the westernmost point of the island, located in the geographical center of the Arousa estuary. But aside from its great tourist appeal, it also boasts a gastronomic attraction: a lighthouse open to the public, now converted into a restaurant. This makes it an exceptional viewpoint offering almost a 360-degree panorama of the estuary. Furthermore, the sunsets are spectacular.
Another interesting option is the sea route to the islet of Areoso , a protected natural area of almost 9 hectares, made up almost entirely of fine sand, so it looks like a dune that has risen from the sea, especially its northern part. To the south, a patch of herbaceous vegetation emerges from the sand. It is surrounded by a reef just below the surface. At its summit are the remains of a megalithic dolmen.
The Carreirón Natural Park is designated as a special protection area for birds such as the grey heron. Its rich natural environment allows for a great diversity of ecosystems, from dune systems and marshes to scrubland, pine forests, and the stunning underwater landscape in its beautiful coves.
Other points of interest to visit are the windmill in the center of the island and the As Aceñas tidal mill , to the southwest, which takes advantage of high and low tides for its operation.
The island boasts five ports, with Puerto Xufre being the most important. Here, the fish market is located, and seafood such as clams, razor clams, shrimp, spider crabs, octopus, and more are sold. At this port, you can witness the loading and unloading of their star product: mussels . Also of note are the docks of El Campo , a popular promenade with recreational areas for children and adults, where a market is held on Saturdays; Cantiño , where the "Seafood Festival" takes place during August; and Cabodeiro, where daily maritime, shellfish, and fishing activities are carried out.
Thanks to all this maritime activity, we can enjoy one of the most exquisite cuisines in a multitude of restaurants, cafes and tapas bars, such as their mussels with designation of origin , prepared in all possible ways: in empanadas, pickled, in scallop sauce, natural, in vinaigrette…
You will undoubtedly appreciate, and even learn, in every corner of the island the way of life of this seafaring people and their relationship with the sea , but you also have the possibility of doing so from within the sea, sailing among birds and dolphins through the waters of the Arousa estuary, taking different and incredible routes and boats towards the islands and islets of white sands and crystal clear waters that bathe the estuary: the island of Cortegada, the island of Ons, the islet of Areoso, the island of Sálvora, and even the Jacobean route to the port of Pontecesures venturing into the fresh waters of the Ulla River.
Experience a true sense of freedom in the Rías Baixas , the pleasure of feeling the sea, its color, the smell of fresh fish and sea salt, the wind, unforgettable sunrises and sunsets, with a group of friends or family. Experience something different on the Island of Arousa .
