The Isla de Arousa is located in the province of Pontevedra (Galicia). The island is divided into three parts: the area around the Punta Cabalo lighthouse and the island of Arosa (joined by a narrow isthmus) and the Carreirón Natural Park. The island is linked to the Iberian Peninsula by means of a bridge almost 2 kilometers long, the longest in Galicia and one of the longest in Spain, which was inaugurated in 1985.
.
The island has been declared a natural reserve, for its landscape and its beaches, making it one of the main tourist destinations in Galicia, along with Sangenjo.

It has about 36 kilometers of coastline, of which 11 are beaches, such as El Área da Secada, La Lavanqueira, El Bao, Camaxe, Carreirón, and O Cabodeiro. There are three sea walks: the Campo, the Cantiño and the one that goes from IGAFA (Galician Institute of Aquaculture Training) to the Área da Secada.
.
Its most interesting places are the surroundings of the lighthouse, the island of Areoso and, to the south, the natural park of Carreirón,
.
The route to Punta Cabalo is the westernmost place of the island, located therefore in the geographical center of the Ría de Arousa. But apart from its great tourist attraction, it has another one at gastronomic level, because you can visit a lighthouse open to the public and nowadays restored as a restaurant. What makes it an exceptional viewpoint from which you can see 360 degrees almost the entire river. In addition, the sunsets are spectacular.
Sunsets are spectacular.
Another interesting option is the sea route to the islet of Areoso, a protected natural area of almost 9 hectares, consisting almost entirely of fine sand, so it looks like a dune emerged from the sea, especially its northern part. To the south, among the sand, emerges an area where grassy vegetation grows. It is surrounded by a reef at the edge of the water. At the top there are the remains of a megalithic dolmen.
.
The Carreir Natural Parkón is classified as a special area for the protection of birds such as the grey heron. It has a rich nature which allows a great diversity of ecosystems, from the dune systems, through the marshes, scrublands, pine forests or the impressive underwater scenery in its wonderful coves.
.
Other points of interest to visit are the windmill in the center of the island and the As Aceñas tidal mill, to the southwest, which takes advantage of high and low tides for its operation.

The island has up to five ports, being port Xufre the most important one where the fish market is located and where shellfish and fish such as clams, razor clams, shrimp, shrimp, nécora, octopus, etc. are marketed. In this port you can see the loading and unloading of its star product, the mejillón. Also important are the Piers de El Campo, a very busy walking area with recreational areas for children and adults, where a street market is held on Saturdays; The Cantiño where is celebrated during the month of August "The seafood festival" and Cabodeiro where the daily seafood, shellfish and fishing activities are carried out.
Thanks to all this seafood activity, we can enjoy one of the most exquisite gastronomy in many restaurants, cafes and taperas, such as its mejillones con denominación de origen, prepared in all possible ways: in breadcrumbs, pickled, in Viera sauce, natural, with vinaigrette…
.
No doubt you will appreciate, and even learn, in every corner of the island the ways of life of this seafaring people and their relationship with the sea, but it is that in addition;s you have the possibility of doing it from inside the sea, sailing among birds and dolphins through the waters of the Arousa river, taking different and incredible routes and boats to the islands and islets of white sands and crystalline waters that bathe the river: Cortegada island, Ons island, Areoso islet, Sálvora island, and even the xacobea route to the port of Pontecesures port adentrándote in the fresh waters of the Río Ulla.
Live an authentic feeling of freedom in the Rias Baixas, the pleasure of feeling the sea, its color, the smell of fresh fish and saltpeter, the wind, unforgettable sunrises and sunsets, with a group of friends or family. Live something different on the island of Arousa.
