The southern zone of Galicia extends from the mouth of the Miño River, forming a natural border with Portugal, to Muros and Noia. From south to north, it encompasses the Rías of Vigo, Pontevedra, Arousa, and Muros and Noia.
The landscape of the Rías is totally different from any other on the national coast and there is also the peculiarity that we will find at the mouth of the first 3 rias a set of islands that make up the “Maritime Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands” formed by 4 archipelagos, Cies, Ons, Salvora and Cortegada within the Ria de Arousa.
Without a doubt, the most outstanding beach in the world , according to the British newspaper The Guardian, is Rodas Beach in the Cíes Islands archipelago, located off the Vigo estuary. Formerly a refuge for pirates, the islands are now uninhabited and only accessible during specific periods. Opposite the Pontevedra estuary and the coast of Sanxenxo, we find the Ons archipelago, the only currently inhabited island in the National Park, where fishing, particularly octopus, is the main activity. Closing off the Arousa estuary is Sálvora, with its almost lunar landscape and constellation of islets, and further along the Arousa estuary, opposite Vilagarcía de Arousa, lies Cortegada Island.
The most important cities are La Guardia, Baiona, Vigo, Pontevedra, Combarro, Sanxenxo, O Grove, Cambados, Vilagarcia de Arousa, Riveira, Muros and Noia.
Sanxenxo is the tourist capital of Galicia, located in the province of Pontevedra, in the Salnés region. It enjoys a perfect location, very close to Pontevedra (18 km), Vigo (50 km), and Santiago de Compostela (66 km). The main airports, Vigo Alvedro and Santiago Lavacolla, are 60 km and 76 km away, respectively.
For the last 15 years, Sanxenxo has held the title of Spanish municipality with the highest number of Blue Flag beaches , from the most crowded urban beaches, such as Silgar or Baltar in Portonovo, to the spectacular and well-known Playa de la Lanzada, which is jointly owned with Grove, passing through Areas, Paxariñas, Montalvo or Major, all with white sand and just a few minutes away.
Along the seafront promenade that runs through Silgar, you will find cafes, bars and restaurants where you can take the opportunity to taste the typical dishes of traditional Galician cuisine based on rich fish, seafood, stews and grilled meats.
Contrary to what one might think, Sanxenxo is not just beaches and sea; it also boasts an enviable cultural and natural offering in the surrounding area. During your vacation, a visit to Pontevedra is a must. Its historic center, centered around the Church of the Pilgrim Virgin, is the second largest in Galicia after Santiago de Compostela, and its model of urban quality, mobility, and accessibility has earned it numerous international awards in recent years. Halfway between Pontevedra and Sanxenxo lies Combarro, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1972 and a Historic-Artistic Site by UNESCO 20 years later for the preservation of its narrow streets by the sea, the 75 registered granaries (hórreos), and the 11 stone crosses (cruceiros) you'll find while strolling. Just 15 kilometers from Sanxenxo, we find Cambados, the capital of Albariño wine and European City of Wine in 2017. Highlights include the historical and artistic center centered around the Plaza and Pazo de Fefiñanes and the Parador de Turismo, extending to the fishing quarter of San Tome.
Following the coastal road, beach after beach, we will arrive at the most famous and renowned, Playa de la Lanzada, which leads us to the municipality of O Grove, recognized worldwide as a seafood paradise and the gateway to the Ria de Arousa, the largest in Galicia, where mussel production is concentrated in rafts and where the most entertaining and fun way to discover all its secrets is with a Catamaran Cruise through the Ria de Arousa with mussel tasting for the adults and marine views for the children.
The microclimate prevailing in the Salnes Valley, which allows the production of Albariño , one of the most renowned white wines in the world, has made Sanxenxo a base camp for sports teams and events, especially for water sports, triathlon, mountain trail running, hiking along the Ruta da Auga (Water Route), or surfing at Playa de la Lanzada, where surfers will find perfect conditions for practicing this sport all year round.
